Counselling & Psychotherapy for Adults, Children & Teenagers

counselling & psychotherapy in Gloucester & Bristol

My name is Emma (she/her) and I am an NCPS accredited, trauma informed integrative counsellor & psychotherapist.

I am passionate about supporting people who are feeling stuck, unable to fully connect to themselves and their lives and are unsure how to move forward. I have a particular interest in supporting adults, children and teenagers exploring;

  • trauma including sexual, physical and psychological/emotional abuse

  • grief & traumatic loss

At the heart of my practice is a person-centred integrative approach. I will meet you with empathy, humour, honesty and non-judgement. You can trust me to honour your thoughts and feelings so we can work through your difficulties together, at a pace that feels safe for you.

I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive space where you feel understood, respected and valued for who you are and offer LGBTQ+ affirming and culturally sensitive counselling.  I have deep understanding of neurodiversity and its brilliant gifts and unique challenges and am experienced in counselling for ASD and ADHD.

Integrative counselling & psychotherapy is a flexible and holistic approach to therapy that allows us to create a tailored approach that draws on different strategies and techniques to suit your individual needs, your personality and your presenting issues. This could include using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-based Brief Therapy (SBFT) and creative approaches.

Trauma

trauma counselling in Bristol & Gloucester

I understand the vulnerability and courage it takes to work through trauma and abuse; it can feel scary or even impossible at times. In being here, you have taken the first brave step and shown you are motivated for change, even if you’re not sure what that might look like.

I will be with you every step of the way, working at your own pace to gently explore your difficulties, your strengths and hopes. You will always been in complete control of our sessions and there is no expectation for you to relive your trauma; we will work safely in your limits of what feels comfortable.

I can support you to better understand and manage your triggers and develop different ways to respond to distressing thoughts, feelings, images, and uncomfortable body sensations to help you feel more in control.

We can then work together to help you process your traumatic experiences so they can become a memory of something that has happened in the past, rather than something you are reliving in the present. We can focus on your strengths and hopes to help you create a sense of balance and peace.

Grief & Traumatic Loss

grief counselling in Gloucester & Bristol

Whilst death is something that affects us all, grief is individual and there is no right way to grieve. You may feel disconnected from your loved one who has died, or even disconnected from those living. Perhaps you are struggling with the confusion and conflict of grieving for someone who has harmed you, or navigating traumatic loss such as an unexpected death, a tragic accident or suicide.

You may be in the initial throws of debilitating grief, or perhaps you have been through the year of ‘firsts’ and as your support has gradually disappeared you may feel an expectation, and a desire, to move on but don’t know how.

You may be caught in the grip of grief but have been pushing on regardless, going to great effort trying to be the old you and the best colleague, partner or parent. You may feel exhausted and numb; a sense you are existing rather than living. You may experience distressing thoughts, feelings, images and uncomfortable bodily sensations which can prevent you from healing leaving you stuck in the grip of the past.

I can support you to process your loss and work through your grief, whatever that looks like, finding ways to grow around it so you can begin to move forward and remember with love instead of pain.

Counselling for Teenagers

teen counselling in Bristol & Gloucester

Adolescence brings plenty of challenges; so many developmental changes are taking place which can bring their own unique struggles. The ongoing impact of the pandemic, added pressures of social media and navigating the online space can feel overwhelming as your child is discovering who they are and how they fit in their world.

Relationships, friendships and bullying, exploring gender and/or sexuality, and academic pressures are common difficulties which can lead to poor self-esteem, anxiety and unhelpful coping strategies impacting teen mental health.

teen counselling in Stroud

I have over 20 years’ experience working with children and teenagers and have spent the last few years counselling teenagers in secondary schools across Stroud & Gloucestershire. I offer developmentally appropriate support based on your child's needs to help them unpick what has led them to counselling and support them to discover their strengths and build their resilience.

I can support your teenager to

  • develop a greater sense of self-acceptance
  • find new ways to respond to challenges & solve problems
  • develop healthy coping strategies

I am experienced in supporting a wide range of issues and can effectively support (but am not limited to):

  • Abuse (including Pre Trial Therapy)
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Autism, ADHD & Neurodiversity
  • Body Image
  • Eating Difficulties
  • Gender
  • Grief & Loss
  • Intrusive Thoughts
  • Low mood/depression
  • School Avoidance
  • Self-esteem
  • Self-harm
  • Sexuality
  • Suicidal Thoughts

What was really good about the counselling?

"Feeling able to cope with everything using strategies I was taught and knowing I had a safe space to share my feelings and be listened to."

Child Therapy

child therapy in Gloucester & Bristol

I bring  7 years’ experience as a PTUK registered Creative Arts and Therapeutic Play Practitioner, addressing a wide range of emotional and psychological issues. Using these skills can be effective for children who may struggle to express themselves verbally.

In these child therapy sessions, your child directs the depth and pace of their explorations through drama/roleplay, music, art, sand play therapy, and movement to:

  • help process difficult emotions, experiences or traumas
  • tap into natural creativity and playfulness
  • facilitate expression, healing, and growth
  • express their feelings and experiences through non-verbal means

“Thank you so much for all your support. With your help, I've come so far. Thank you for being there for me and always making feel validated. I appreciate all the time you've spent helping me and the hope for the future that you have helped me find”
